We have medicalized burnout. We treat it as a personal failure of resilience. We tell clinicians to do yoga, to practice mindfulness, to eat well. These are good things. But they do not fix the fact that the system is broken.
Burnout is often just a mismatch between the worker and the workload. And a huge part of that workload is administrative drag—the friction of non-clinical tasks.
A workforce portal is not a yoga class. It is a system fix. It reduces drag. It makes finding information frictionless. It automates the annoying stuff so the human brain has more energy for the important stuff.
When a nurse doesn’t have to spend 15 minutes after a shift figuring out their schedule for next week because it’s clear and updated in the portal, that is 15 minutes of life they get back. It is 15 minutes less of resentment. We cannot tech-support our way out of the systemic causes of burnout entirely, but we can stop adding to the problem. We can make the technology a helper, not a hinderance.
